Jewish Genetic Links to Gog & Magog (Yjuj & Majuj)<\/h1>\n

Yajuj and Majuj are the Arabic words for the Hebrew Gog and Magog which is the Hebrew version of the Assyrian words ‘Gugu’ and ‘Matgugu’. These names refer to a people whom the Greeks knew as Amazons and Scythians and the Persians knew as Alan or the grass nomads of Central Asia. A genetic link has been established between the Mongols and the ancient Scythians<\/a> as well as the Khazarian tribal confederation which converted to Judaism in the 8th Century CE (see article below).\u00a0 The Mongol invasions (1206-1324) may be the fulfillment of the Quran’s prophecy which appears in Surah 18:99 and describes the hordes which invaded China, the Middle East and Europe. According to Wikipedia:<\/p>\n

“The Scythians … were Iranian-speaking equestrian tribes who inhabited large areas in the central Eurasian steppes between the 7th century BC and 4th century AD.[1][2][3] Their territories during the Iron Age were known to classical Greek sources as “Scythia”. Their historical appearance coincided with the rise of equestrian semi-nomadism from the Carpathian Mountains of Europe to Mongolia in the Far East during the 1st millennium BC.[4][5] The “classical Scythians” known to ancient Greek historians were located in the northern Black Sea and fore-Caucasus region. However, other Scythian groups encountered in Near Eastern and Achaemenid sources existed in Central Asia.”<\/p>\n

The Achaemenid sources are a reference to the Achaemenid Empire which was founded by Cyrus the Great, who is referred to as Al Dhul Qarnain in the Quran. A bas relief of Cyrus the Great wearing his two horned crown can be seen at Pasargade in Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Hebrew historian Titus Flavius Josephus (37-100 CE), who was a Zealot turned loyal Roman citizen (Zealots were anti Roman occupation Hebrew insurgents), wrote that Alexander the Great built iron gates in some unspecified area. Thus, the name Alexander was associated with the later Persian fortifications at Daryal and Derbend in Georgia. There is absolutely no evidence that Alexander the Great built any fortifications in this area.<\/p>\n

Cyrus was later killed in December of 530 BCE by a grass nomad tribe known as the Massagetae who were related to the Scythians in their dress and mode of living; they fought on horseback and on foot. Cyrus was considered to be a messiah (Isaiah 45:1) or an anointed one by the Hebrews. He is extensively mentioned in the Biblical books of 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Isaiah and Daniel. The Hebrew tribes in Arabia knew about Cyrus and asked the Prophet (pbuh) about him under his cryptic title, ‘the two horned one’, which brought about the revelation in Surah Al Kahf.<\/p>\n

According to Johns Hopkins geneticist, Dr. Eran Elhaik, modern day Ashkenazi Jews are genetically linked to the Armenian, Georgian and Azerbaijani descendants of the Turco-Scythian population which comprised the Khazarian Kingdom that converted to Judaism in the 8th<\/sup> Century CE. Khazarian Jews are known today as Ashkenazi Jews which currently comprise 92% of world Jewry according to the Wikipedia article entitled \u2018Ashkenazi Jews\u2019. The Hebrew word ‘Ashkenaz’ is a derivation of the word ‘Ishkuz’; one of the many Assyrian words for Scythians as are the words ‘Gugu’ and ‘Matgugu’ (Gog and Magog in the Bible). The Ashkenazi Jew, Theodor Herzl , was the author of Zionism which advocated the erroneous assumption that the Ashkenazi Jews were the original Hebrew natives of Palestine. This political theory, which Herzl extracted from the mythological origin of European Jewry, led to the ethnic cleansing of the native Palestinians and the occupation of their homeland, Palestine. The following article explains the research of this Jewish geneticist as well as the fierce opposition to his research by his fellow Israeli geneticists who refuse to publicize their research sources and methods in order to perpetuate the myth of the Middle Eastern origin of the European Ashkenazi Jews.<\/p>\n

Scientists usually don\u2019t call each other \u201cliars\u201d and \u201cfrauds.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n

But that\u2019s how Johns Hopkins University post-doctoral researcher Eran Elhaik describes a group of widely respected geneticists, including Harry Ostrer, professor of pathology and genetics at Yeshiva University\u2019s Albert Einstein College of Medicine and author of the 2012 book \u201cLegacy: A Genetic History of the Jewish People.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For years now, the findings of Ostrer and several other scientists have stood virtually unchallenged on the genetics of Jews and the story they tell of the common Middle East origins shared by many Jewish populations worldwide. Jews \u2014 and Ashkenazim in particular \u2014 are indeed one people, Ostrer\u2019s research finds.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a theory that more or less affirms the understanding that many Jews themselves hold of who they are in the world: a people who, though scattered, share an ethnic-racial bond rooted in their common ancestral descent from the indigenous Jews of ancient Judea or Palestine, as the Romans called it after they conquered the Jewish homeland.<\/span><\/p>\n

But now, Elhaik, an Israeli molecular geneticist, has published research that he says debunks this claim. And that has set off a predictable clash.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s just wrong,\u201d said Marcus Feldman of Stanford University, a leading researcher in Jewish genetics, referring to Elhaik.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sometimes strong emotions generated by this scientific dispute stem from a politically loaded question that scientists and others have pondered for decades: Where in the world did Ashkenazi Jews come from?<\/span><\/p>\n

The debate touches upon such sensitive issues as whether the Jewish people is a race or a religion, and whether Jews or Palestinians are descended from the original inhabitants of what is now the State of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ostrer\u2019s theory is sometimes marshaled to lend the authority of science to the Zionist narrative, which views the migration of modern-day Jews to what is now Israel, and their rule over that land, as a simple act of repossession by the descendants of the land\u2019s original residents. Ostrer declined to be interviewed for this story. But in his writings, Ostrer points out the dangers of such reductionism; some of the same genetic markers common among Jews, he finds, can be found in Palestinians, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

By using sophisticated molecular tools, Feldman, Ostrer and most other scientists in the field have found that Jews are genetically homogeneous. No matter where they live, these scientists say, Jews are genetically more similar to each other than to their non-Jewish neighbors, and they have a shared Middle Eastern ancestry.<\/span><\/p>\n

The geneticists\u2019 research backs up what is known as the Rhineland Hypothesis. According to the hypothesis, Ashkenazi Jews descended from Jews who fled Palestine after the Muslim conquest in the seventh century and settled in Southern Europe. In the late Middle Ages they moved into eastern Europe from Germany, or the Rhineland.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNonsense,\u201d said Elhaik, a 33-year-old Israeli Jew from Beersheba who earned a doctorate in molecular evolution from the University of Houston. The son of an Italian man and Iranian woman who met in Israel, Elhaik, a dark-haired, compact man, sat down recently for an interview in his bare, narrow cubicle of an office at Hopkins, where he\u2019s worked for four years.<\/span><\/p>\n

In \u201cThe Missing Link of Jewish European Ancestry: Contrasting the Rhineland and the Khazarian Hypotheses,\u201d<\/a> published in December in the online journal Genome Biology and Evolution, Elhaik says he has proved that Ashkenazi Jews\u2019 roots lie in the Caucasus \u2014 a region at the border of Europe and Asia that lies between the Black and Caspian seas \u2014 not in the Middle East. They are descendants, he argues, of the Khazars, a Turkic people who lived in one of the largest medieval states in Eurasia and then migrated to Eastern Europe in the 12th and 13th centuries. Ashkenazi genes, Elhaik added, are far more heterogeneous than Ostrer and other proponents of the Rhineland Hypothesis believe. Elhaik did find a Middle Eastern genetic marker in DNA from Jews, but, he says, it could be from Iran, not ancient Judea.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elhaik writes that the Khazars converted to Judaism in the eighth century, although many historians believe that only royalty and some members of the aristocracy converted. But widespread conversion by the Khazars is the only way to explain the ballooning of the European Jewish population to 8 million at the beginning of the 20th century from its tiny base in the Middle Ages, Elhaik says.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elhaik bases his conclusion on an analysis of genetic data published by a team of researchers led by Doron Behar, a population geneticist and senior physician at Israel\u2019s Rambam Medical Center, in Haifa. Using the same data, Behar\u2019s team published in 2010 a paper concluding that most contemporary Jews around the world and some non-Jewish populations from the Levant, or Eastern Mediterranean, are closely related.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elhaik used some of the same statistical tests as Behar and others, but he chose different comparisons. Elhaik compared \u201cgenetic signatures\u201d found in Jewish populations with those of modern-day Armenians and Georgians, which he uses as a stand-in for the long-extinct Khazarians because they live in the same area as the medieval state.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an unrealistic premise,\u201d said University of Arizona geneticist Michael Hammer, one of Behar\u2019s co-authors, of Elhaik\u2019s paper. Hammer notes that Armenians have Middle Eastern roots, which, he says, is why they appeared to be genetically related to Ashkenazi Jews in Elhaik\u2019s study.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hammer, who also co-wrote the first paper that showed modern-day Kohanim are descended from a single male ancestor, calls Elhaik and other Khazarian Hypothesis proponents \u201coutlier folks\u2026 who have a minority view that\u2019s not supported scientifically. I think the arguments they make are pretty weak and stretching what we know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Feldman, director of Stanford\u2019s Morrison Institute for Population and Resource Studies, echoes Hammer. \u201cIf you take all of the careful genetic population analysis that has been done over the last 15 years\u2026 there\u2019s no doubt about the common Middle Eastern origin,\u201d he said. He added that Elhaik\u2019s paper \u201cis sort of a one-off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Elhaik\u2019s statistical analysis would not pass muster with most contemporary scholars, Feldman said: \u201cHe appears to be applying the statistics in a way that gives him different results from what everybody else has obtained from essentially similar data.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Elhaik, who doesn\u2019t believe that Moses, Aaron or the 12 Tribes of Israel ever existed, shrugs off such criticism.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a circular argument,\u201d he said of the notion that Jews\u2019 and Armenians\u2019 genetic similarities stem from common ancestors in the Middle East and not from Khazaria, the area where the Armenians live. If you believe that, he says, then other non-Jewish populations, such as Georgian, that are genetically similar to Armenians should be considered genetically related to Jews, too, \u201cand so on and so forth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Dan Graur, Elhaik\u2019s doctoral supervisor at U.H. and a member of the editorial board of the journal that published his paper, calls his former student \u201cvery ambitious, very independent. That\u2019s what I like.\u201d Graur, a Romanian-born Jew who served on the faculty of Tel Aviv University for 22 years before moving 10 years ago to the Houston school, said Elhaik \u201cwrites more provocatively than may be needed, but it\u2019s his style.\u201d Graur calls Elhaik\u2019s conclusion that Ashkenazi Jews originated to the east of Germany \u201ca very honest estimate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In a news article that accompanied Elhaik\u2019s journal paper, Shlomo Sand, history professor at Tel Aviv University and author of the controversial 2009 book \u201cThe Invention of the Jewish People,\u201d said the study vindicated his long-held ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201dIt\u2019s so obvious for me,\u201d Sand told the journal. \u201cSome people, historians and even scientists, turn a blind eye to the truth. Once, to say Jews were a race was anti-Semitic, now to say they\u2019re not a race is anti-Semitic. It\u2019s crazy how history plays with us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The paper has received little coverage in mainstream American media, but it has attracted the attention of anti-Zionists and \u201canti-Semitic white supremacists,\u201d Elhaik said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Interestingly, while anti-Zionist bloggers have applauded Elhaik\u2019s work, saying it proves that contemporary Jews have no legitimate claim to Israel, some white supremacists have attacked it.<\/span><\/p>\n

David Duke, for example, is disturbed by the assertion that Jews are not a race. \u201cThe disruptive and conflict-ridden behavior which has marked out Jewish Supremacist activities through the millennia strongly suggests that Jews have remained more or less genetically uniform and have\u2026 developed a group evolutionary survival strategy based on a common biological unity \u2014 something which strongly militates against the Khazar theory,\u201d wrote the former Ku Klux Klansman and former Louisiana state assemblyman on his blog in February.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not communicating with them,\u201d Elhaik said of the white supremacists. He says it also bothers him, a veteran of seven years in the Israeli army, that anti-Zionists have capitalized on his research; not least because \u201cthey\u2019re not going to be proven wrong anytime soon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But proponents of the Rhineland Hypothesis also have a political agenda, he said, claiming they \u201cwere motivated to justify the Zionist narrative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

To illustrate his point, Elhaik swivels his chair around to face his computer and calls up a 2010 email exchange with Ostrer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a great pleasure reading your group\u2019s recent paper, \u2018Abraham\u2019s Children in the Genome Era,\u2019 that illuminate[s] the history of our people,\u201d Elhaik wrote to Ostrer. \u201cIs it possible to see the data used for the study?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Ostrer replied that the data are not publicly available. \u201cIt is possible to collaborate with the team by writing a brief proposal that outlines what you plan to do,\u201d he wrote. \u201cCriteria for reviewing include novelty and strength of the proposal, non-overlap with current or planned activities, and non-defamatory nature toward the Jewish people.\u201d That last requirement, Elhaik argues, reveals the bias of Ostrer and his collaborators.<\/span><\/p>\n

Allowing scientists access to data only if their research will not defame Jews is \u201cpeculiar,\u201d said Catherine DeAngelis, who edited the Journal of the American Medical Association for a decade. \u201cWhat he does is set himself up for criticism: Wait a minute. What\u2019s this guy trying to hide?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite what his critics claim, Elhaik says, he was not out to prove that contemporary Jews have no connection to the Jewish people of the Bible. His primary research focus is the genetics of mental illness, which, he explains, led him to question the assumption that Ashkenazi Jews are a useful population to study because they\u2019re so homogeneous.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elhaik says he first read about the Khazarian Hypothesis a decade ago in a 1976 book by the late Hungarian-British author Arthur Koestler, \u201cThe Thirteenth Tribe,\u201d written before scientists had the tools to compare genomes. Koestler, who was Jewish by birth, said his aim in writing the book was to eliminate the racist underpinnings of anti-Semitism in Europe. \u201cShould this theory be confirmed, the term \u2018anti-Semitism\u2019 would become void of meaning,\u201d the book jacket reads. Although Koestler\u2019s book was generally well reviewed, some skeptics questioned the author\u2019s grasp of the history of Khazaria.<\/span><\/p>\n

Graur is not surprised that Elhaik has stood up against the \u201cclique\u201d of scientists who believe that Jews are genetically homogeneous. \u201cHe enjoys being combative,\u201d Graur said. \u201cThat\u2019s what science is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
